Every afternoon the kindergartners at Imagine School have snack. Each child brings his or her own snack each day. Being supermom, seeker of perfection, I pack well balanced snacks for my little school girl. Her typical snack usually consists of a small piece of fruit, some protein (nuts or cheese) and something sweet or something salty. Evidently, not all the other kids bring snacks like Sarah's. Most just bring a granola bar or peanut butter crackers. So everyday, Sarah shares her snack with other kids.
Once she came home telling me I had to send her with more Lemonheads because she only got to have one of the 8 that I gave her. The rest had been shared and there just weren't enough for everyone.
Occasionally, Miss Yeagley will ask parents to donate "emergency snack" for the classroom so there will be snacks for kids who forget to bring something. Sarah has taken great pride in donating some of her favorites - dried strawberries, lemonheads and pretzel goldfish. The other day Miss Y sent a note home requesting emergency snacks. I checked the pantry and found a brand new box of vanilla wafers, which I packed in Sarah's backpack along with her lunchbox and snack container. On the way to school as we reviewed the contents of her lunch, snack and backpack, I instructed Sarah to share the cookies with her class.
That afternoon, Sarah came home with the opened box of vanilla wafers. I must have looked perplexed as I pulled the box from her backpack because she said "Mom you're the best, thanks for sending those. You have to put those in my backpack again tomorrow; the kids will think I lied if I don't share vanilla wafers again."
You might find this hard to believe (lol,) but even supermom can be a ding dong sometimes and this box of vanilla wafers coming back home left me a bit speechless for a moment or two. After it registered, I replied "Sarah, I sent these to share with the class." "I know," Sarah said "I did share, everybody had some."
Now, Sarah feels very special sharing her snack with her friends, and since she usually has a variety of snacks this is something she does every day. So although it was crystal clear to me that she was to DONATE the whole box for Miss Y to pass out as needed, in Sarah's mind she just thought "My mom rocks, she gave me a whole box of cookies to share with my friends. And I even have enough to share with everyone again tomorrow."
I can't argue with her big heart! And I have to admit that I like that she thinks I rock. But next time, I will be sure to attach a note to our snack donation.
